Publisher/Date: Random House, 1987, stated first edition, NAP. Retail $850.00

Format/Condition: NEW 3 volume gorgeous cloth hardcover books in slipcase in fine condition. All edges gilt. Very large: Each measures 10×14 inches. Vol 1-3 Pages: 399 369 281. Index. Profusely illustrated. Chinese & English.

Description: Western critics and historians of Chinese painting had long looked on the 19th and early 20th centuries as a sort of dead zone in the development of Chinese art, attributing the work of more modern Chinese masters to a burst of creativity inspired by the “eccentrics” of the 17th and 18th centuries. Maverick collector Robert H. Ellsworth revealed the error of this assumption when he acquired a number of brilliant 19th-century Chinese paintings in the 1960s. What he discerned was a period of enormous change and innovation, influenced both by a major shift in Chinese art toward calligraphy and seals (prompting more brutal, energetic brushwork) and by increasing exposure to the West; clearly, Ellsworth argues, these 19th-century paintings were the true precedents for modern Chinese art.

This three-volume catalog is a singular exploration of this unjustly overlooked era and is a superb example of the bookbinder’s art in its own right, originally priced at $850 and selling now for well over $1,000 from some rare book dealers. It beautifully reproduces all 471 paintings Ellsworth donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as of 1987, along with hundreds of images of calligraphic scrolls and fans.

The index volume contains commentaries and biographies of 300 artists and calligraphers, along with transliterations into Chinese script of every inscription and seal. The three volumes are bound in silk, with embossed gold stamping, petite Chinese calligraphic scrolls applied to the covers, and gilt-edged pages, all enclosed in a similarly decorated clamshell case in brown silk.
</body-html>
