Description: Pastel drawing was central to James McNeill Whistler’s development as an artist, according to Whistler scholar Robert H. Getscher. Here he conducts a rare opportunity to see 65 of these essential works from the periods before, during, and after the artist’s pivotal stay in Venice from 1879-1880; many have never been reproduced before and are too fragile for exhibition. Particular attention is paid to Whistler’s nude and veiled figures; as his mistresses came and went, notes Getscher, they inspired an eclectic mix of biblical, oriental, and mythological subjects. The heavily annotated book includes writings from Whistler and his critics.
