Description: Magnum photographer Fred Mayer spent a total of nine months in Siberia from 1990 to 1992, gaining the trust of indigenous populations of Chukchi, Evyeny, Nanai, Ainu, Udegeytsi, Nivkhi, Itelmen, Koryaks, and Yukagirs around the Sea of Okhotsk. In this album of large photographs, some nearly 18×13 inches, Mayer captures views of almost deserted landscapes and of tiger hunts, salmon fishing, reindeer breeding, and bear parties, as well as portraits of the people of this nearly forgotten region, where wind and ice are present in all seasons. Human rights specialist Günther Doeker-Mach describes the tension between Russian colonization and the native peoples trying to preserve their culture and way of life.
