Description: American collector and dealer Harry Packard immersed himself in Japanese art and culture beginning in the late 1940s while stationed in Japan with General MacArthur’s occupation forces. His studies and collecting activities greatly enhanced the understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and art in the U.S.

This catalog celebrates the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco’s acquisition of 27 of these pieces, presenting them in large color plates with additional works. Spanning the late 11th through the mid-19th centuries—from the Heian to the Edo period—the sculptures, masks, scrolls, paintings, and screens of the collection each manifest the highest expression of the artistic accomplishment they represent. The fourteen religious objects include bronze and iron sculptures, paintings, and liturgical items of early Shinto and Buddhist culture. The thirteen works of secular art include paintings by Ogata Korin, Yosa Buson, and Hon’ami Koetsu.
