Description: From the dustjacket: Some of the finest English silver ever made is featured in the Jerome and Rita Gans Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This book published in 1992 shortly after the Gans collection was first placed on loan to the museum examines 82 pieces of English silver that, when viewed together, represent the rich history of fine silversmithing in England, from the Huguenot era (1688-1727) through the Georgian, Regency, and Early Victorian periods (until 1863).

This book takes the reader through 175 years of English Silver, by way of sumptous ewers, basins, trays, and covered cups, to tea and coffee wares, adding comments on their use and design, and punctuated by numerous details that show their maker’s marks and the fine-points of silver manufacture.

Such legendary figures as Paul de Lamerie, James Shruder, Paul Shorr, Robert Garrard I and II, and Edward Farrell come to life in biographical notes accompanying each section, along with fascinating vignettes about the original owners – all members of British peerage.

For the silver collector, scholar, and casual reader alike, this book – together with the addendum by John Culme – promise to inform and delight.
