Description: There are many books presenting ancient Egyptian architecture and tomb reliefs as archaeological finds; this one presents 120 of these same subjects in the way they were originally intended: as works of devotion and art.
Here are superbly rendered reliefs of such creatures as a quail chick and a calf, a wild bull during a hunt and a leaping lion. Long rows of sphinxes guard a temple at Luxor, while the temple of Amon Ra boasts columns any postmodernist architect would be proud of. Even the pleats of a pharaoh’s garb create a strong visual rhythm here, and reveal the substantial influence Egyptian art had on 20th-century design.
