Description: Though primarily known for his paintings of ballet dancers and racehorses, Edgar Degas also produced one of the most popular sculptures of the late 19th century, the Little Dancer of Fourteen Years. For the most part, however, Degas’ sculptures were, by his own admission, not intended for public display. They were powerful, highly personal studies in wax and clay. Illustrated in color throughout, this exhibit catalog gathers more than 70 sculptures of dancers, horses, and women bathing, converted from Degas’ surviving wax studies into bronze castings, and also includes more than 30 sketches, lithographs, and pastel drawings.
