Description: Serene, stunning, otherworldly, the black and white landscapes of Robert Werling are the work of a poet with a camera. Hazy light filters through horizontally spreading treetops at Big Sur, California; white birch trunks emerge from a ghostly lake at Portage Glacier, Alaska; moss makes a herd of shaggy beasts out of rocks along Moonstone Beach in Cambria, California. Werling studied under Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham and became the close friend of Brett Weston, yet his vision is his own—sharp contrast and also subtle gradations emerge in the 78 gelatin silver prints reproduced here, taken over three decades.
