Description: Visually rich Turkmen carpets, produced in the Central Asian region between the Kara Kum (black sand) and the Kizil Kum (red sand) Deserts, are among the most sought-after and collected of all "oriental" rugs. The Wiedersperg Collection at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco consists of 82 Turkmen knotted-pile weavings, including rugs, bags, ceremonial trappings, and decorative hangings, including some of the rarest and finest examples of their type. They are presented in this exhibit catalog in 81 color plates, along with additional figures and page-filling closeups, a detailed history and structural analysis, and a glossary of specialized terms.
